Hilton has announced that they have started to collect used bars of soap from guest rooms and recycle them. They say that they will generate 1 million new bars of soap by 15 October (which apparently is Global Handwashing Day). For the squeamish, the used soap is "crushed, sanitized and cut into new soap bars", so it's not used soap.

Whilst this step, along with recycling shower gel and shampoo bottles (which we know Hilton and others hoteliers also do), is highly laudable, why isn’t the Hospitality and Leisure industry doing a lot more recycling?

The backlash against single use plastic has captured consumers' attention, who now want to be associated with sustainability. This is the zeitgeist, and brands which forget this will quickly become unfashionable if not tainted.
