New long-term visa rules in Ukraine

On 26 June 2019, the amended procedure of issuing long term visa (type D) will come into force in Ukraine.

From late June, individuals who are entitled to a long-term visa, can apply for it on the teritorry of Ukraine, namely at the department of consular service of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine. Previously, the long-term visa could be received only abroad, despite the fact that citizens of some countries were able to enter Ukraine without a visa and/or under the 90-days visa free regime.

In connection with the amendments, some important changes in the process of obtaining the visa are also expected:

  • Submission. Applicants can submit the required documents personally or by regular mail upon prior online registration on the official website of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
  • Cost. In case of an application via the consular department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, a visa type D will cost = UAH 2550 (appr. EUR 80).

It remains to be seen, whether or not the mentioned visa improvements will also have effects on the border regime and the procedures regarding the obtaining of temporary / permanent residence permits. Officials of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and State Migration Service have not commented on this aspect with regards to the new visa rules implementation. Consequently, new border and migration legislation updates are also expected.
