ESG: working together to deliver a safer climate

All eyes are currently on COP26, where the future of our planet hinges on critical discussions and negotiations. Businesses, governments and regulators are also engaged in big conversations, urgently seeking to understand opportunities and obligations to deliver a safer climate. We're supporting those conversations.

Delivering on the ESG agenda

We believe that law firms need to focus on four areas to deliver progress on the environmental, social and governance (ESG) agenda:

1. Look in the mirror first, understand and reduce law firm operational emissions levels. 
2. Partner with clients to enable them to deliver a safer climate.
3. Facilitate and support those clients in taking steps to deliver a safer climate.
4. Proactively influence all parties involved in law making and regulation to put in place the right legal frameworks to support sustainability goals.

The co-chair of our Global Board, Shane Gleghorn, recently joined a virtual panel to discuss these and other topics. Held as part of The Lawyer's Business Leadership Summit 2021, Shane was joined on the webinar panel by attendees from Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer, Pinsent Masons, Burges Salmon and Irwin Mitchell.

The panel acknowledged that existing climate change bodies are doing great work. Rather than duplicating efforts, firms should seek to understand the scope of, and involve themselves in, the work being done by organisations like The Chancery Lane Project and The Legal Sustainability Alliance.
