At Taylor Wessing, we are committed to adapting and evolving with the legal landscape. With the introduction of the Solicitors Qualifying Examination (SQE), we have aligned our recruitment and training processes to provide an inclusive and comprehensive pathway for aspiring solicitors regardless of whether you are applying for a training contract or a solicitor apprenticeship. In this article, we will explore how Taylor Wessing has embraced the SQE, highlighting our approach to supporting candidates throughout their journey towards qualification.
The SQE is a two-stage assessment process that replaced the traditional Legal Practice Course (LPC) and training contract route in September 2021. Designed by the Solicitors Regulation Authority (SRA), it aims to create a more standardised, accessible, and consistent path towards qualification as a solicitor in England and Wales. The SQE consists of two parts: SQE1 focuses on legal knowledge through multiple-choice exams, while SQE2 tests practical legal skills such as advocacy, client interviewing, and drafting.
We understand that preparing for the SQE can be challenging; thus, we have developed a supportive framework for candidates undertaking this new pathway.
The introduction of the SQE aligns with our commitment to promote diversity within our organisation by offering various routes into law that removes barriers traditionally faced by many aspiring solicitors from underrepresented backgrounds.
By only taking individuals through the SQE route to qualification, we aim to attract talented individuals who reflect diverse perspectives – ultimately enriching both our firm's culture and service offerings.
To qualify as a solicitor with Taylor Wessing, you can choose through three different options, which will suit your needs and aspirations:
Solicitor apprenticeship designed for school leavers - our six-year programme has been designed to help you hit the ground running from day one. You'll work towards an LLB (Hons) Law degree and a Solicitor Level 7 Apprenticeship. Each week you'll spend four days working in a practice area on client cases, with one day studying with our training provider, ULaw. The final two years of your apprenticeship will work towards completing the SQE. Applications open 1 January and close 1 March.
Training contract - As an external candidate, completing a vacation scheme with us is the only way to be considered for a training contract. Across our two-year training contract you'll move through four six-months seats in different practice groups. All trainee solicitors take on a seat in either Corporate or Finance, and at least one seat must involve contentious work. Future trainees will complete the SQE a year ahead of commencing their training contract.
Internal sponsorship - understanding that the training contract route is not for all applicants, senior paralegals within Taylor Wessing can apply for sponsorship of the SQE, to support their ongoing development. Employees will study the SQE part-time whilst undertaking their paralegal work. Additionally, they can also apply for a training contract, and complete the SQE alongside fellow future trainees.
At Taylor Wessing, embracing change is part of our DNA – which is why we have wholeheartedly welcomed the Solicitors Qualifying Examination into our recruitment framework. As a leading law firm in areas such as Corporate Finance, Real Estate, Intellectual Property and Technology, Dispute Resolution, Employment & Pensions or Private Client Services, it is crucial that we stay ahead of industry developments while providing exceptional support mechanisms for those pursuing a career in law.
Through thoughtful planning and dedicated resources, we are committed to ensuring that our future solicitors have the best possible start in their legal careers, equipped with the skills and knowledge needed to succeed in an ever-evolving profession.
