7 July 2022
On 5 July 2022, the European Parliament definitively adopted the Digital Services Act (DSA) and Digital Market Act (DMA) proposed by the European Commission in December 2020, following the political agreement found between the European Parliament and the Council on 24 March (DMA) and on 23 April 2022 (DSA).
This Digital Services Package must now be formally adopted by the Council next September. Both acts will enter into force after their publication in the Official Journal and will be applicable in all EU member states.
The DSA and the DMA update and set new rules applicable to online platforms, such as marketplaces, social platforms or search engines, to make them accountable in their role of connecting consumers with goods, services, and content.
The Digital Services Packages notably aims to prevent the distribution of illegal content and products such as hate speech, child pornography, fake news, sale of drugs or counterfeits... It will give better protection to users and to fundamental rights online, and establish a transparency and accountability framework for online platforms across the European Union.
