On 8 June we hosted our annual copyright seminar in our office in London. We covered the latest copyright updates from the UK and were joined by colleagues from across the EU to update us on the practical impact of the DSM Copyright Directive, one year after its implementation deadline. We were then lucky to be joined by our headline speaker, Kevin Brennan MP, who provided his insights on next steps following the DCMS Select Committee's inquiry into the economics of music streaming, his Private Members' Bill and the CMA's market study.

UK case update

In this session we looked at recent significant cases in the UK, including YouTube/Cyando on intermediary liability, Sheeran v Chokri on the test for infringement and Hebden v Domino Recording on obligations to exploit copyright works, alongside other important UK developments.

Fireside chat with Kevin Brennan MP

Adam Rendle put our questions to Kevin on the many industry policy developments he has been heavily involved in.

About Kevin: Kevin Brennan is a Welsh Labour Party politician who has been the Member of Parliament for Cardiff West since 2001. He is a member of the Digital, Culture, Media and Sport Select Committee. In the last Labour government he was a Minister in the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills having previously been a Minister in the Department for Children, Schools and Families and also in the Cabinet Office.

In December 2021 Mr Brennan presented his Copyright (Rights and Remuneration of Musicians, Etc.) Private Members' Bill to Parliament.

Kevin is a member of the Musicians Union and of the parliamentary rock band MP4. He recently released his debut solo album.
