Disputes & Investigations partners Andrew Howell and Laurence Lieberman recently discussed the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the use of technology in the litigation context with Commercial Dispute Resolution. They commented on the tools available, and the implications for a future post-COVID world.
In examining how COVID-19 has impacted the use of legal technology in disputes, Andrew Howell noted that "it has accelerated a lot of things in a really positive way" referencing the speed with which virtual communication is now "completely the norm, and has become accepted very quickly".
"There was a bit of delay," for firms, while they waited to see how the courts would respond, but "the UK courts got into action quickly to set up remote hearings" he continued, pointing out "there are major advantages of using technology to streamline the court process – you can waste a huge amount of time and costs on interlocutory hearings, but it is much more efficient now".
Laurence Lieberman echoes Andrew in stating: "The changes have been forced on us largely because of COVID-19, but the benefits are here to stay."
