Participants of Starbucks Odessey’s beta program have already begun selling their limited edition free NFT stamps for up to $2000 US, with a volume of $143,000 already having been traded on Nifty Gateway’s official secondary marketplace. While Starbucks also promised NFT holders’ access to private events and international trips, none of these features have been released yet, although, this is expected to change once the program is released to the general public. Users can therefore only earn points for NFT stamps by completing specific tasks such as trivia challenges or buying drinks.

Ultima Online, an online role-playing game, is considered to be the oldest corner of the metaverse, after having been launched 25 years ago in 1997. Rather than consisting of small static environments primarily used as a backdrop for battle scenes, Ultima Online simulated an entire medieval fantasy kingdom and even enable users to have a persistent presence in the game even when offline. This article discusses the various challenges faced by developers throughout the game’s history and compares these to the problems faced by those involved in developing new metaverse technologies.

Nokia, known for manufacturing mobile devices, has ventured into the metaverse while on a mission to aid workers in remote locations. Nokia has been collaborating with the University of Technology in Sydney and Dortmund University to conduct research in a brewery tech lab using augmented reality and 5G technology. Even Cessna aircraft technicians in South Australia are also being assisted by Nokia, which provided a 5G connected Microsoft HoloLens in order to teach people how to service aircrafts using augmented reality, as part of just one of their many projects to expand the use of metaverse technology in day-to-day life.

Centre Pompidou, home to France’s National Museum of Modern Art, has begun planning a new exhibition featuring various NFTs and other works by digital artists as a means of examining the new relationship between art and the blockchain. This marks the first time that NFTs have been accepted in the Centre’s collection, which is considered the largest modern art museum in Europe, and signifies the importance of these new technologies for the art world.

This article discusses the three primary pillars upon which the new phygital metaverse, i.e. consisting of real and virtual elements, is based. Not only is therefore augmentation and impressiveness imperative to attract users, but also co-creation and community are important for keeping those users involved in the new technologies. Last but not least, tokenised reward mechanisms are also considered crucial, in order to compensate consumers for their contributions and complete the desired behavioural shift that should ensure continued use of the metaverse.
