Whatever your view, Brexit continues to cause huge uncertainty for UK resident EU nationals and their families. As the Brexit deadline approaches on 31 October 2019 it is increasingly important for employers to support their workers.
All EU citizens and their families must, if they have not already, take action to protect their UK immigration status after Brexit. This should be done before 31 October 2019, especially if there is a "no deal". Based on Home Office figures approximately 1 million of around 4 million EU nationals have taken action to date meaning lots of people still need to apply. Taking action will preserve the right to live and work in the UK, travel in and out of the UK, rent property, open bank accounts, and ensure access to healthcare and benefits is not affected. As employers, you have an important role to play in that process.
On 29 March 2019 the Home Office introduced the EU Settlement Scheme. Under the scheme UK resident EU citizens and their families apply for immigration status to preserve their existing right to continue to live in the UK after Brexit.
The online scheme can be accessed using an android phone. iPhone access will be enabled in due course. The scheme is free. Those with over 5 years' residence will be granted a settled status. Those with under 5 years' residence will be granted a pre-settled status which can be converted to settled status after 5 years' residence.
Straightforward applications typically take 15 - 20 minutes to complete with a decision being issued in 1 – 5 working days. Those with less typical working or residence patterns in the UK may find that the application takes a little longer or requires additional documentation to be submitted. Even so decisions should be issued in less than 2 weeks.
