COP27: insights and opinion from this year's conference

    COP27, the 27th United Nations Climate Change Conference of the Parties, is due to take place in Egypt from 6-18 November.

    Set against the backdrop of multiple global crises and ongoing severe weather events, this year's conference is focused on implementation. To build on agreements made in Glasgow last year and deliver solid action to combat climate change around:

    • reducing emissions
    • helping countries adapt to climate change 
    • securing proposed funding for vulnerable developing countries.

    In this COP27 hub we've collated related materials and will be sharing updates throughout this year's conference to keep you informed on the latest developments from Sharm El-Sheikh.

    Thematic days

    Wednesday 9 November - Finance Day

    With finance playing a crucial role in implementing climate action and protecting vulnerable countries, Finance Day will feature sessions looking at the climate finance ecosystem and how to scale up finance for the net zero future.

    Thursday 10 November - Science Day and Youth & Future Generations Day

    Science Day

    After several landmark reports from the IPCC, UNEP and other institutions, Science Day will feature panel discussions and events discussing the outcomes and recommendations of these reports, and encourage engagement with the scientific and academic community.

    Youth & Future Generations Day

    Ensuring the voice of today's youth and future generations is heard loud and clear is cited as one of the key objectives of COP27. With this in mind, Youth & Future Generations Day will feature youth success stories and challenges and allow for interaction between high-level policymakers and young representatives of the Conference of Youth (COY17).

    Friday 11 November - Decarbonisation Day

    Decarbonisation Day will provide an opportunity to discuss plans and technologies to reduce carbon in the atmosphere, with emerging technologies showcased.

    Saturday 12 November - Adaption & Agriculture Day

    Developing countries are particularly vulnerable to the impacts of climate change. Adaption Day will provide an opportunity to discuss a range of adaption-related issues including agriculture, loss and damage, with sessions looking at how to build resilience of agriculture and food systems against climate impacts.

    Monday 14 November - Gender Day and Water Day

    Gender Day

    Despite their indispensable role in tackling the climate change challenge, women continue to bear a disproportionate burden from the adverse impacts of climate change. Gender Day aims to provide a platform to discuss existing challenges and share success stories from around the world, while promoting gender sensitive and responsive policies, strategies and actions.

    Water Day

    After a year of both severe droughts and monsoons, discussions at Water Day will cover all issues related to sustainable water resource management including water scarcity, drought, and improvement of early warning systems.

    Tuesday 15 November - Ace & Civil Society Day and Energy Day

    Ace & Civil Society Day

    Climate change requires us all to take action. With this in mind, Ace & Civil Society Day has been specially created to engage Civil Society and let participants share best practices and challenges.

    Energy Day

    Energy Day deals with all aspects of energy and climate change, including renewable energy and new energy sources. Discussion topics including hydrogen, energy efficiency, smart grids and energy storage.

     
    Wednesday 16 November - Biodiversity Day

    Biodiversity Day looks at nature and ecosystem-based solutions, with discussions about the impact climate change is having on biodiversity and how to halt biodiversity loss.

    Thursday 17 November - Solutions Day

    There are many solutions to the broad array of climate change challenges we face being developed. Solutions Day will bring together their creators including government representatives, businesses and innovators to share their experiences, proposed solutions and ideas for alliances and collaborations.
