Our FinTech bootcamp webinar series aims to provide a grounding in those areas which affect our most innovative FinTech start-ups.

The regulation of financial services firms operating in the UK is complex, and this is more evident for innovative businesses which do not neatly fit into regulatory compartments or definitions. In this series, we will go through the basics of the regulatory regime in the UK and particular pitfalls you will need to be aware of when setting up operations. We will also focus on various topics which will be helpful to many start-ups.

The four sessions will provide you with the opportunity to hear from our experts and to ask questions. If you are interested in joining any of the sessions please register.

Agenda

COMPLETED - 30 September 2020, 15:00-16:00 - FCA authorisation: do you need it, and how you get it Financial services regulation in the UK is complex and far-reaching. The Financial Conduct Authority has made it clear that its rules are technology neutral. But where does this leave FinTechs, whose activities do not fit neatly into existing definitions? In this session, we will look at what types of activities require authorisation or registration with the regulator, the impact of carrying out regulated activities without the correct authorisations, and importantly, how you go about getting authorised.
COMPLETED - 14 October 2020, 15:00-16:00 - Decoding crypto regulation The word "cryptoasset" covers a multitude of different instruments, which are treated differently by the UK regulatory regime. Some cryptoassets will be securities, treated like shares or bonds. Some will be electronic money, or stable coins, or cryptocurrencies, or exchange tokens…and each of these categories are treated differently by the Financial Conduct Authority. In this session, we will look at the different types of cryptoasset recognised by the Financial Conduct Authority, and how they are regulated. We will also look at the registration regime, which applies to operators of crypto exchanges, and certain cryptoasset wallets.
COMPLETED - 28 October 2020, 15:00-16:00 - Payments services and the need-to-know guide for e-commerce "Payments" is one of the more mature areas of FinTech development, but it is continuing to advance at a rapid pace. In this session we will explore PSD2, which provides the legal foundation for an EU single market for payments and has reach into areas beyond "traditional" payments services. We will look at how that legislation impacts e-commerce, and in particular marketplace businesses and platforms. Complying with PSD2 requirements can be challenging, but we look forward to helping you navigate this landscape, so that you can offer the best experience to your customers, take advantage of all of the opportunities available, while complying with the regulations.
11 November 2020, 15:00-16:00 - Focus on venture capital We will explore the funding options available to start-ups, with a focus on your first equity raise and will seek to de-mystify the funding process and update you on current market norms.
