Europe is abuzz with discussions on the largest GDPR fine ever, while in China, a failed cybersecurity review of a foreign enterprise made the headlines. Could a fine like this also happen in China? And will 2023 become the year of enforcement in China's data protection regime?
In Europe, data privacy and cybersecurity are essentially based on the GDPR, which covers all relevant aspects. In China, the data protection framework is complex and consists of various laws and regulations, such as the Cybersecurity Law, the Data Security Law, and most recently, the Personal Information Protection Law (PIPL).
In the second episode of our video talk series, China In & Out, our Shanghai colleague Kai Kim and the head of our China TMC practice group, Dr. Michael Tan, will discuss what we can expect in 2023 in China in the fields of data protection and cybersecurity. They will also explore the differences between the Chinese data protection regime and the European GDPR, highlighting why European enterprises operating in China cannot simply adopt their GDPR blueprint in China.
