We have partnered with City St George's, University London for many years to provide free legal advice appointments through their City Community Advice Centre on a range of different areas of law to people who are not eligible for legal aid and cannot afford to pay.
Working alongside student volunteers from the City Law School, volunteer lawyers and trainees from Taylor Wessing ensure that vulnerable individuals in the community gain access to vital legal assistance.
In 2023, we began participating in City's new Social Housing Disrepair Clinic. The Clinic was launched in response to the increasingly reported issue of poor housing conditions in the UK – including the harrowing story of a two-year old boy who died because of extreme mould.
This specialist clinic supports members of the public in council or housing association properties who are facing housing disrepair issues, catering for some of the most vulnerable in our society.
In 2024, we started providing support to City on the Innocence Project – a pro bono initiative which supports victims of miscarriages of justice by enabling investigations into their cases. Our volunteer lawyers work with students at City University to assist clients in making an application to the Criminal Cases Review Commission to carry out a review of their case and conviction.
This service plugs a significant gap left by the chronic underfunding of legal aid within the criminal justice system, providing an opportunity for clients to finally be heard.
I just wanted to send my deepest thanks to you all for the kind support and guidance you provided regarding my case with Companies House. The outcome means more to me than I can put into words. It represents the closing of a very difficult chapter in my life, and I am immensely grateful to have had your support during this process…Your incredible advice helped me with my next steps and gave me the confidence to persist in what at times felt like an overwhelming battle. Thank you for the work you do. It truly makes a difference.
