After an investigation by the UK's Competition and Markets Authority, these pressure tactics have been deemed "wholly unacceptable" and in breach of consumer law. Online hotel booking sites will no longer be allowed to falsely advertise a hotels popularity to rush customers into making impulsive decisions. They must also display all compulsory charges such as taxes and booking fees and make discounts and promoting deals clearer.

With unlimited fines on those who fail to comply, this is a win for consumer rights and transparency. The rules will apply equally to OTAs and Brand.com, some of whom had started to copy these high-pressure sales tactics in the battle to improve conversion.
