TW: thinkingdifferentlyA statistic that caught our attention over the summer break is that in Q1 2019 more room nights were booked on Airbnb than Expedia. Airbnb clocked up 91 million room nights versus 80.8 million for Expedia - a difference of 10.2 million room nights in favor of Airbnb. Now second only to Booking Holdings (ie Booking.com, Priceline, etc - which had 217 million room nights), Airbnb's first quarter revenue growth rate was 30%, far outpacing Expedia and Booking. Despite the regulatory issues around the world and some community backlash, within just over 10 years Airbnb has firmly cemented itself as one of the top three retail channels for accommodation - very timely given the proposed IPO in 2020. It really is quite astonishing how quickly Airbnb has grown, and the pace of growth shows no signs of slowing. |
