Consumer and Retail in the News – Issue 309

This week's top stories in the Consumer and Retail sector:

TW Viewpoint:

This week we see how the beverage market is seeking to reduce its use of single use plastic. From water consumption in the workplace to the packaging of cans of Guinness, steps are being taken towards a more 'circular economy'. With the intention of keeping plastic within the economy (and out of the natural world), Evian has committed to having 100% of its bottles made from recyclable plastic by 2025.

Tech is a key part of this. PepsiCo are combining the use of smart phone app technology with water consumption, tapping into environmentally conscious consumers by allowing users to track their water intake and set hydration targets through dispensers at work. This move is to meet wider trends in the consumer market, where not only are consumers concerned about single use plastic and health, but there is demand for more personal choice and personalisation of service. PepsiCo's acquisition of SodaStream last year and recent launch of a personalised beverage vessel 'Drinkfinity' is indicative of this wider strategy.
