Yeong Wai Cheong was admitted as an advocate and solicitor of the Supreme Court of Singapore in 1991 and as a solicitor of the High Court of Hong Kong in 1997. He has extensive experience both as a practicing lawyer and as an in-house legal counsel.

Prior to joining RHTLaw Taylor Wessing, Wai Cheong was a partner with one of the largest Singapore law firm.  As a practicing lawyer, he has represented different parties in many financing transactions including syndicated and bilateral financing transactions and operating and finance leases, both domestic and cross-border. Wai Cheong’s financing transactions involved different asset classes as collateral, ranging from real estate to commodities to ships. Wai Cheong has also represented various Singapore banks in transactions which involve the financing of acquisition of shares in Singapore companies listed on the Singapore Exchange in connection with the take-over and acquisition of such companies. Wai Cheong has also advised on derivatives transactions, foreign exchange transactions and margin trading.  In addition to transactional matters, Wai Cheong also advises on banking and financial regulatory compliance.

Wai Cheong was previously the General Counsel for Asia as well as the Head of Legal for Singapore for an European bank and before that, the Head of Capital Markets Legal for South Asia as well the Head of Legal for Singapore for another European bank. Apart from advising on legal issues concerning the management and operation of the banks, Wai Cheong has also advised on wide range of transactions involving the banks such as derivatives, repurchase, structured credits, structured deposits, structured finance, syndicated and bilateral finance, structured trade and commodity finance, advisory and mergers and acquisitions, debt instruments and structured equity warrants.

Wai Cheong’s real estate experience include representing purchasers and vendors for the sale and purchase and financing of residential, commercial and industrial properties in Singapore and Hong Kong, developers in connection with the purchase, development and financing of land for both residential and commercial purposes and landlords and tenants in connection with leases of residential, industrial and commercial real estate.
