Bribery Bill
In late March the Bribery Bill was published by the Government. The Bill is intended to clarify and modernise the laws on bribery in England, Wales and Northern Ireland so as to provide a more effective legal framework to combat bribery in the public and private sectors, both in the UK and abroad. The Bill is intended to enable the UK to meet its obligations under the OECD Convention on Combating Bribery in International Business Transactions. It is also hoped that it will provide more certainty as to the difference between bribery and the legitimate giving and receiving of advantages. In doing so, however, it proposes introducing a new criminal offence that can be committed by firms and companies (as opposed to individuals).
