Roland has 17 years' experience acting for a range of major international brand and technology owners.  He joined us in December 2006, with his team of six trade mark specialists, from a Magic Circle firm where he trained and had been a partner for five years and head of the London trade mark portfolio team.

Roland practices across the full range of contentious and non-contentious intellectual property. He has a particular focus on litigation and disputes relating to trade marks, designs, copyright and domain names, the management of global brand portfolios and devising and supporting anti-counterfeiting strategies.

He has been involved in over 600 UK and cross-border cases relating to counterfeits and parallel imports, both civil and criminal, regularly liaising with customs, trading standards and police.  He is responsible for the global or regional trade mark portfolios for a number of major brand owners, giving advice on clearance risks, protection strategies, enforcement and commercial exploitation.  In addition, Roland advises on transactional IP matters, including IP and related EC competition law aspects of corporate deals, IP sharing/splitting arrangements, IP tax structuring, securitisation, franchising, sponsorship, merchandising and licensing.

Roland is recognized as a leading IP lawyer in Legal 500, Chambers (UK and Global), Legal Business's Legal Experts and Who'sWhoLegal.  He is described in Chambers 2013 as ""gives the best for his clients,"  and in Legal 500 2012 as having "Outstanding IP knowledge, especially on trade mark law".  He is one of only two UK lawyers top-ranked in each of the three categories of Anti-Counterfeiting, Contentious and Non-Contentious in the World Trademark Review WTR1000 2012 edition.  He sits on the Amicus Curiae committee of MARQUES (the European trade mark owners association), authoring the submissions to national governments in the European Court of Justice references in Nokia v HM Customs and CIPA v UKIPO (“IP Translator”), and on the City of London Law Society's IP Committee, which focuses on copyright issues. He was a longstanding member of the Public Policy Committee of the UK Anti-Counterfeiting Group and, until recently, sat on the International Trade Mark Association's European Anti-Counterfeiting and Enforcement Committee.
Roland writes and speaks regularly on IP topics and has been interviewed about such issues in the mainstream media.  He has a first class honours degree in civil engineering from Edinburgh University.
