Taylor Wessing triumphs at The Lawyer Awards

24-Jun-2009  |  Private Client, Tax, The Middle East

Taylor Wessing is celebrating after being named Private Client Team of the Year at The Lawyer Awards.  The contribution made by the firm's Pro Bono Committee was also recognised as they came runner up in the Pro Bono Team of the Year category. Comedian Michael McIntyre hosted the ceremony, which took place at the Grosvenor House Hotel.  Over 1000 of the leading names from across the legal sector attended.

Taylor Wessing's Private Client group has witnessed considerable growth in recent years and the award acknowledges the increasing market recognition of the Firm's position as one of only a handful of serious City law firms with real strength and international reach in this area.  Taylor Wessing is the only top ten private client firm to have offices in the UK, Germany and France.

In 2008, the Private Client practice gained a landmark decision from Mr Justice Briggs in the landmark case of Breakspear v Ackland.  Describing the case, the judging panel said:

"This is just one case of many conducted by the Taylor Wessing team which demonstrates breadth and depth in its client portfolio, from advising billion-dollar family trust reorganisations to acting on disputes over landed estates."

The panel went on to say that

"Taylor Wessing has remained an influential player in the private client world and a rarity in that world in having major international reach."

Mark Buzzoni, Head of the Private Client group, said

"We are delighted to have been named Private Client Team of the Year.  The award is recognition of the growth of the group and the quality of our lawyers and our work."

The firm was also named runner up in the Pro Bono Team of the Year category.  Since 2005, the Pro Bono team has advised over 1000 people at the Blackfriars Settlement free legal advice clinic.  In addition, significant contributions are made by individual partners and the award particularly recognises the tireless work of employment partner Andrew Granger, who last year secured compensation and a landmark judgment in the United Nations' highest court (the Administrative Tribunal) after more than eight years of seeking justice and pressing for legal and procedural reforms, some of which have now been introduced.
