Taylor Wessing is the exclusive European legal sponsor of the 15th Annual BioPartnering Europe Conference

11-Oct-2007  |  Life Sciences & Healthcare

Taylor Wessing is the exclusive European legal sponsor of the 15th Annual BioPartnering Europe (BPE) Conference, on 7-9 October 2007. The firm's Life Sciences & Healthcare Group will be hosting two workshops and chairing a leadership session at the event.

Dr Malcolm Bates will chair a leadership session discussion. Against a background of the biologicals sector's recent move into the mainstream, with big pharma seeking to establish themselves in the sector and a new wave of companies seeking to emulate the success of the early biotech pioneers, the discussion will consider the partnering of biologicals from the perspective of big pharma, big biotech and the R&D stage company, including current issues and trends.

Dr Malcolm Bates will also be chairing a workshop alongside partner Daniel Pavin, which will review industry trends and how those trends are affecting the terms of agreements commonly used in life sciences, looking more specifically at the effects that geographic expansion can have on how template agreements work, what evolving CRO business models mean for outsourced research agreements, and the risks associated with virtualisation rather than doing things in-house.

Daniel Pavin comments:

"Deal terms between pharma and biotech have been evolving, in many instances in biotech's favour, as pharma reacts to pressures such as dwindling product pipelines.  Business models throughout the life sciences value chain are also evolving. Emerging markets, for example, are increasingly becoming targets for partnering, outsourcing and distribution.  Life sciences companies should therefore be thinking about whether the contracts they use have kept pace and, if those contracts are to be used in new markets, whether they need adapting to make sure that they still work effectively."

In addition, UK and German partners Simon Walker and Dr Christian Traichel will host a workshop to highlight potential pitfalls and best practice tips for those growing their business by fundraising or partnering, to ensure a smooth exit.
