Private Capital and Clean Energy: exploring a growing relationship

11-May-2012  |  Corporate, Energy & Environment, Private Client, Projects

The quest for alternative funding sources for the clean energy sector has never been more acute. The venture capital firms that funded the first wave of European clean energy technology companies are either withdrawing from the sector entirely or moving up the value chain to support less risky, later-stage businesses. In contrast, private capital investors say they are ready to increase their investment in the clean energy sector. But what level and type of investment will we witness and what are the motivating factors behind this investment?

This report is ground-breaking in beginning to answer these questions. For the first time we have asked private capital investors not just about their intentions for the sector, but about what is driving their investment and what sort of returns they are looking for. The findings, based on a survey and interviews with more than 120 respondents, are timely and make for interesting reading, and both the Financial Times and The Sunday Times commented on the report last weekend.
