Important Changes to the UK Advertising Regime

The Advertising Standards Authority, the self-regulatory body responsible for governing advertising in the UK, has recently announced a number of important changes to the UK advertising regime, which are scheduled to come into effect within the next 12 months. These developments represent the biggest shake-up to the UK advertising regime in the last decade and will fundamentally change:

- the advertising Codes that the ASA applies to determine whether advertising is compliant;
- the scope of the ASA's ambit, and will further extend its control over online advertising; and
- the processes the ASA adopts to monitor and investigate advertisements.
