Although generic market penetration is already high in England, the aim of the proposed changes is to further increase savings for the NHS by maximising the use of generic medicines, as well as providing greater dispensing flexibility. 83% of drugs in England are prescribed generically, and the Department of Health hopes to increase this to 88%, producing an overall saving of as much as £44.7 million a year.
