Does the CRC Energy Efficiency Scheme affect you?

17-Aug-2010  |  Energy & Environment, Real Estate & Infrastructure

30 September 2010, the end of the registration period for the first phase of the CRC Energy Efficiency Scheme, is rapidly approaching and it is clear from Ministerial announcements, Environment Agency publications and even national newspapers that the current level of registration is considerably, perhaps worryingly, lower than might have been expected. The sanction for fully qualifying participants who fail to register in time is a fixed penalty of £5,000 together with an ongoing daily penalty of £500 until the application for registration is made, up to a total of £45,000. Don't get caught out.

The CRC potentially affects a wide variety of types of organisations, including, Funders, Developers, Contractors, Landlords, Tenants, Trustees, Investors, and Hotel owners and operators.

Does the CRC Energy Efficiency Scheme affect you?

Think of the whole of your organisation or an organisation in whose performance you have an interest (parent, all related subsidiaries, joint ventures, franchises etc)...

  1. Does the whole organisation occupy or own, in total, 55,000 square metres or more of office or other non-domestic space?
  2. Does the whole organisation employ 2,000 people or more?
  3. Was the total electricity bill for 2008 for the whole organisation £500,000 or more?

If you, or an organisation in whose performance you have an interest, answer 'yes' to one or more of the questions above then you will probably be affected by the CRC.

If you, or an organisation in whose performance you have an interest, answer 'no' to all three questions you may still be affected by the CRC.

How will it affect you? What do you have to do?
