Thomas Raab began his professional career as a lawyer in 1985 in the Munich office of Taylor Wessing. He has been a partner with the firm since 1992.
As head of the Taylor Wessing Trademarks Team, Thomas’ main practice areas are trademarks, signs and designs. He advises and represents brand owners on trademark strategies, in court and out of court infringement cases, licensing matters and the combat of trademark and product piracy. He also represents trademark owners in application, opposition and cancellation proceedings before the Federal Patent Court, the Boards of Appeal of the Office for Harmonization in the Internal Market, and the European Courts. Several of his cases resulted in landmark decisions in marking law, including the Diesel / Montex case (ECJ), “dental moulds” and “LEGO building blocks”.
He acquired his international experience during secondments to law firms in London (1986) and New York (1993).
In 2007 Thomas was once again listed in the “Guide to the World’s Leading Trade Mark Law Practitioners”, and JUVE lawyers’ directory refers to him as “frequently recommended” in trademark matters on a regular basis.
Thomas Raab has authored the trademark part of the Munich lawyers' manual "Gewerblicher Rechtsschutz” (C.H. Beck Verlag) and co-authored the new standard commentary on Community trademark law (C.H. Beck Verlag) as well as “Internationales Markenrecht” (ManagementCircle) and other national and international publications on marking and design law.
Thomas Raab is a member of the German Association for the Protection of Intellectual Property (GRUR), of the International Trademark Association (INTA), the European Community Trademark Association (ECTA), and of MARQUES, an association for the defence of the interests of European trademark owners. He is also member of the Anti-Counterfeiting Committee of INTA and of the MARQUES Committee. He is a regular speaker at national and international conferences dealing with trademark law topics and issues. A native speaker of German, Thomas is fluent in English.
