Ruth is Emeritus Professor of Law at the University of Bristol.  Having obtained a First Class Honours Degree in Law from the University of Durham, she qualified as a solicitor with Clifford Chance, London in 1974.  She pursued a dual academic and practice career in Intellectual Property with Bristol University and Humphreys & Co., Solicitors, Bristol until she joined the firm in 2001 as Consultant in the Intellectual Property Department.

Ruth has been active for many years in the International Trademark Association, New York, USA.  She has served as a member of the INTA Board of Directors, Vice-Chair of the International Amicus Committee and Chair of the Trademark Offices Practices Committee working with trade mark offices worldwide including OHIM, WIPO and the USPTO.  She is a contributor on Seniority to INTA's loose-leaf publication on The Community Trade Mark and a principal editor for INTA's online Practitioners' Guide to the Madrid System for the International Registration of Trademarks.  Her other books include Blackstone's Guide to the Trade Marks Act 1994 and Blackstone's Guide to the Community Trade Mark.

In 2001, the Lord Chancellor appointed Ruth an Appointed Person under the Trade Marks Act 1994.  The Appointed Person hears appeals from decisions of the UK Registrar of Trade Marks and his or her decisions are final.  Ruth was the first woman and solicitor to receive such appointment.  Previously Appointed Persons were drawn from the ranks of leading trade mark barrister Queen's Counsel.

Ruth has experience of trade mark filing and prosecution, assignment and licensing of intellectual property rights and intellectual property litigation.  From inception in 1991 - 2008 Ruth directed Bristol University's Diploma in Intellectual Property Law and Practice training top City lawyers for careers in Intellectual Property.
