Roland has 16 years' experience acting for a range of major international brand and technology owners. He joined us in December 2006, with his team of six trade mark specialists, from a Magic Circle firm where he trained and had been a partner for five years and head of the London trade mark portfolio team.
Roland practices across the full range of contentious and non-contentious intellectual property. He has a particular focus on disputes relating to trade marks, designs, copyright and domain names, the management of global brand portfolios and devising and supporting anti-counterfeiting strategies.
He has been involved in over 600 UK and cross-border cases relating to counterfeits and parallel imports, both civil and criminal, regularly liaising with customs, trading standards and police. He is responsible for the global or regional trade mark portfolios for a number of major brand owners, giving advice on clearance risks, protection strategies, enforcement and commercial exploitation. In addition, Roland advises on transactional IP matters, including IP and related EC competition law aspects of corporate deals, IP sharing/splitting arrangements, IP tax structuring, securitisation, franchising, sponsorship, merchandising and licensing.
Roland is recognised as a leading IP lawyer in the latest editions of Legal 500, Chambers (UK and Global), Legal Business's Legal Experts and Who'sWhoLegal. He is an active committee member of INTA's Anti-Counterfeiting and Enforcement Committee, the Anti-Counterfeiting Group's Public Policy Committee and the City of London Law Society's IP Committee. He has written many articles for a wide range of publications, spoken at numerous conferences and events worldwide, and has been interviewed by the mainstream media on a number of occasions to give expert comment on current IP issues. Roland has a first class honours degree in civil engineering from Edinburgh University.
