Managing Partner (UK)

Michael was appointed Managing Partner of Taylor Wessing UK on 1 October 2004.  Prior to that he was Head of both the Litigation & Dispute Resolution Department and the Reconstruction & Corporate Recovery group where he specialised in advising financial institutions, companies, insolvency practitioners, directors and shareholders on banking and insolvency issues and the restructuring of companies. 

Michael was educated at Otago University, New Zealand [LLB, LLM] (1983/1985) and was admitted as barrister and solicitor of the High Court of New Zealand in 1984.  He qualified as a solicitor in the UK in 1990 and became a partner with Taylor Wessing in 1992.

Recent transactions include:

  • Advising US clients on the restructuring and the winding down of UK and European subsidiaries.
  • Restructuring the non performing subsidiaries of pan European group.
  • Advised the administrators of Reliant Motors Limited.
  • Advised on the recovery of loans and/or investments to dot.coms (e.g. Boo.Com); Internet and telecom companies (e.g. Isle of Wight) and sports clubs (e.g. Crystal Palace).
  • Successfully defended Firesa against a claim by Libra Bank in relation to Ecuadorian Government Debt.

Michael was included in the Lawyer's "Hot" 100, named as a leading individual in Restructuring and Insolvency in Chambers UK and also named as an expert in Banking Litigation in Legal Experts.
