Matthew is a senior associate in the Intellectual Property department who specialises in patent litigation and opinion work. He has particular experience of acting for clients in the pharmaceutical and life sciences industry sectors.

His areas of expertise include:

  • patent litigation;
  • patents and utility models;
  • regulation of medicinal products and medical devices; and
  • intellectual property rights in the technology sector.

Matthew has acted for clients in a number of recent actions in the High Court and Court of Appeal in the United Kingdom and has experience of hearings during Opposition Proceedings in the European Patent Office (Technical Board of Appeal). He has advised on patents in the pharmaceuticals, biotechnology and optical industries. Matthew also has experience of coordinating multi-jurisdictional litigation around Europe.

Matthew trained at Taylor Wessing before qualifying as a solicitor in 2006.  Matthew has a first class degree in medical microbiology from Edinburgh University and a PhD in medical microbiology from Cambridge University that involved a variety of molecular and cell biology and immunological techniques. He gained a Diploma in Intellectual Property Law and Practice from Bristol University in 2007.  Matthew has published articles in a number of journals including CIPA Journal, Bioscience Law Review and IP & Technology Law Journal.
