Malcolm Bates – Partner

Malcolm is a partner in the Intellectual Property Department and Head of Intellectual Property in Taylor Wessing's Cambridge office.

His legal specialisations are:

• The commercial and intellectual property aspects of technology transactions including spin-outs, start-ups, venture capital investments, trade sales and IPOs.
• IP and IT agreements, including patent and software licensing, research and development agreements, collaborations, clinical trials agreements, distribution and agency agreements.
• Intellectual property and IT contract disputes and patent validity and infringement issues.

Malcolm works primarily in the following industry sectors: life sciences and healthcare, IT, and mobile telecommunications.

He was previously Vice President and General Counsel at Genset in Paris, a NASDAQ listed biotechnology and bioinformatics company. Malcolm speaks regularly on commercial and intellectual property issues. Malcolm has a degree in molecular biology and biochemistry from the University of Durham and a Ph.D. in molecular biology from Imperial College, London. He is the Company Secretary of ERBI, the biotech network of Cambridge and the East of England.

Malcolm speaks both French and German.
