Kai Westerwelle advises major national and international companies in all areas of IT-Law including the various licensing models, all kinds of services, OEM, R&D, procurement, data protection and other regulatory requirements, e-commerce and multimedia law, e-payment processes, open source requirements as well as telecommunication law. He has supported a substantial amount of national and international restructuring and outsourcing projects, also in business areas underlying particular restrictions such as the banking and insurance sector, as well as numerous M&A transactions and IPOs.
Kai studied at the universities of Bonn and Lausanne/Switzerland and served his law apprenticeship in Aachen, Speyer and Toronto/Canada. He then worked as an assistant at a civil law institute at the University of Trier, where he graduated as Doctor in Law in 1996. After having worked at the law firms of Clifford Chance Pünder and Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer in Frankfurt/Germany and San Francisco/USA he became partner of our law firm in July 2003.
Kai is the author of various publications, mainly in the areas of competition law, code of conduct, and in particular all areas of information technology and multimedia. He regularly gives lectures at educational trainings, seminars, international congresses as well as at universities. He is an active member of the German Society of Law and Information (DGRI), the Association for Intellectual Property and Copyright Law (GRUR), and the German-American Lawyer’s Association (DAJV).
Kai is chairman/member of the advisory board of several Technology and Venture Capital companies.
He is a German native speaker, fluent in English and speaks French.
