Malcolm Bates – Partner

Malcolm is a partner in the Intellectual Property department based in London and Cambridge and Head of the Life Sciences Group.

His legal specialisations are:

• The commercial and intellectual property aspects of technology transactions including spin-outs, start-ups, venture capital investments, trade sales and IPOs.
• IP and IT agreements, including patent and software licensing, research and development agreements, collaborations, clinical trials agreements, manufacturing agreements, distribution and agency agreements.
• Intellectual property and IT contract disputes and patent validity and infringement issues.

Malcolm works primarily in the following industry sectors: life sciences and healthcare, technology, cleantech, IT, and mobile telecommunications.

He was previously Vice President and General Counsel at Genset in Paris, a NASDAQ listed biotechnology and bioinformatics company. Malcolm speaks regularly on commercial and intellectual property issues. Malcolm has a degree in molecular biology and biochemistry from the University of Durham and a Ph.D. in molecular biology from Imperial College, London. He is the Company Secretary of One Nucleus, the UK's largest biotech and medical devices network.

Malcolm speaks both French and German.

Malcolm is recognised by Legal 500 2009 and described as a "very experienced licensing lawyer" who provides an "excellent service".
