James obtained a BSc in Mathematics and Physics from the University of Bristol.  He subsequently was called to the Bar of England and Wales in 1986.  After spending a year as a pupil barrister (one of his pupil masters being Nicholas Pumfrey, now an English Patents Judge), he joined a firm of London solicitors in 1987.  For his entire career he has specialised in intellectual property.

He became one of the first solicitors in England specialising in intellectual property to obtain the Solicitor-Advocate (Higher Courts Civil) qualification (pursuant to regulations introduced in 1992), entitling him to appear as advocate in all higher civil courts.

He has advised and acted in intellectual property litigation in England for clients in a wide range of sectors including pharmaceuticals, engineering, electronics, hi-fi, biotechnology and the motor industry.  He has also considerable experience in advising and negotiating licences and other transactional matters involving IP (including in the context of European competition law).

James is profiled in the English legal publications "Chambers Guide to the Legal Profession" and the "Legal 500".  He is a member of the AIPPI (Association Internationale Pour La Protection de la Propriete Industrielle), associate member of the British Chartered Institute of Patent Agents and an MIEE (Member of the Institute of Electrical Engineers).

James was listed in "Legal Experts 2004" in his field, IP.
