David Sant is a senior associate in the Intellectual Property group, specialising in patent litigation, patent prosecution and opinions.

He worked for many years at the European Patent Office (EPO), initially as a patent examiner in principal directorate Physics, working on both examination and opposition procedures. He then served as project leader for technical cooperation with the 13 accession states of central and eastern Europe. He formed and was head of the EPO’s office in Brussels, where he worked mainly on legislative proposals such as the Community Patent and the Directive on Computer-implemented Inventions.

David graduated in Physics at King’s College (London University). He is qualified as a solicitor-advocate, having rights of audience in all the English civil courts, and as a European Patent Attorney. He serves on the EQE committee for new attorneys at the EPO and is a member of the parliamentary committee of CIPA. David has an MBA from Bocconi University in Milan.

His practice covers both contentious and non-contentious patent matters, including EPO oppositions and cases before the High Court in London, in all areas of the physical sciences including telephony, communications, navigation, optics, interferometry, horology and printing. He has published a number of articles on patent prosecution and litigation.
